MOROCCO

The ancient city of Fes, Morocco – the spiritual capital of the country with The medina of Fez listed as the World Heritage Site. It is believed to be one of the world’s largest urban pedestrian zones including the University of Al Quaraouiyine which was founded in 859 and the oldest continuously functioning university in the world. It also has Chouara Tannery from the 11th century, one of the oldest tanneries in the world. The city has been called the “Mecca of the West” and the “Athens of Africa.”

Walking through the street markets of Media filled with local traders, scent of species and freshly brewed  mint tea offers an unforgettable experience to get a flavour of Moroccan culture before getting lost in the maze of narrow streets and passages.

If it was not for the world falling into the corona-virus crisis and more borders closing with each day of my visit, I could have stayed longer in Morocco and explore more of this diverse and ancient country. Medina of Fes is a jewel of architecture representing various influences from  ancient Arab influences through the Iberian empire of Al-Andalus to the more recent French protectorate.
